I was walking down the street
Just a-waving my hand
Looking for somebody to acknowledge me
No one said nothing
Nobody waved
I kicked up my feet
And I walked away
Worth a damn?
I ain't worth a damn
Worth a damn?
I ain't worth
I's walking down the street
And I seen this man
And he weren't nothin' but a skeleton
Well, he reached out
And he took my hand
And led me towards that setting sun
The setting sun
Oh my god, It's done
It's too late to run from that setting sun

That dark-hearted whip-poor-will recites the rosary
While Rose Marie cries herself to sleep
The yard runs wild: so many empties in that heaped-up trash pile
Those dented cans never make it to the street
Now, with a lilac smile & the glassy-eyed tears of a crocodile,
Little Penny made a pretty nickel on her knees
And Ricky broke a plate
And he told Rose Marie he'd be home real late
Said he found a coin and thought it might be lucky
Overcast with a chance of rain
You'd feel real good if not for all this pain
Lucy's lush tongue lashes loose on the melody
While Melody shook loose the braids of her hair
The shot rang out and it was so nearby and so, so loud
That Lucy choked on the words and didn't tell nobody
